Support for citizen participation processes through ad-hoc visualization of planned wind turbines using mobile augmented reality technology

In the context of the energy transition, the increased expansion of wind energy and the construction of new wind turbines is a high priority. However, siting decisions and planning permission are often preceded by lengthy and controversial debates at local level. In order to achieve a high level of transparency in communication and thus acceptance among the population, the use of practical visualization tools can have a supportive effect.

The aim of the AR4WIND project was to analyse the needs, potential and impact of the use of mobile augmented reality visualizations in citizen participation processes. To this end, a pilot application was developed and tested in various test phases. This made it possible to evaluate the practicality of the application in everyday planning and its use in public participation processes and to draw conclusions for further developments.

EPC was responsible for managing communication and coordination as well as the transfer of results.
