Heat-free in the Ruhr region

Cooperative heat prevention in the Essen-Schlenhofstraße district

In the pilot project “Hitzefrei im Pott”, EPC gGmbH is working with the city of Essen to develop innovative and co-creative approaches to heat prevention in the Schlenhofstraße district. The aim is to work closely with residents, the housing industry, administration and research to develop and implement socially equitable and locally adapted measures to reduce heat stress in parallel with the planned neighborhood redevelopment.

We rely on hybrid participation formats that integrate our participation platform decidim and a web-based GIS as well as analog solutions. The focus is on vulnerable groups as well as structural and planning solutions to improve the local microclimate.

EPC

  • designs and implements the participation process in the neighborhood,
  • supports the development and implementation of measures,
  • realizes the public relations campaigns.

The project is part of the nationwide research program “Urban Heat Labs”, which is funded by the BBSR as part of ExWoSt and supports model projects for heat prevention throughout Germany.
