HEATLOOP

The HEATLOOP project has set itself the goal of developing a concept for the efficient usage of waste heat in commercial districts. The concept is designed to be ready both for decision-making and implementation as well as testing and evaluating in a real-world implementation as part of a demonstrative proposal.

Local district heating associations have already been successfully tested in the real world for industrial operations that have large thermal-energy installations and major central potential for waste heat. However, smaller commercial applications also offer a generally significant potential for using waste heat through their comparably high number of operations (including small-to-medium-sized enterprises or SMEs). Integrating this waste heat from such commercial operations into the comprehensive heating network and making it useful is the idea behind this project.

For that reason, HEATLOOP will examine the practical feasibility of implementing such a smaller heating association for at least two commercial areas in Bochum. Given a corresponding agreement, the constructional realisation and long-term monitoring of the technical and economic conditions should be attached with the end of the conceptual phase of the project.

EPC will develop a network of stakeholders as part of the project and thereby create the basis for the necessary organisational and administrative structures for the heating association.
