MiKaDo – Master plan integrated climate adaptation Dortmund

The number of heatwaves is not only increasing, they are also becoming more extensive. In combination with the more frequent heavy rain falls, the results of climate change are threatening urban life. Therefore, the adaptation to climate change has utmost importance for the city of Dortmund. In this context, a climate adaptation concept has already been developed for the city district Hörde. Based on the accumulated knowledge and experiences from concept developments and their implementation processes, a master plan for an integrated, city-wide adaptation to climate change will be developed. This master plan should guarantee a healthy and resilient long-term city development.

An essential aim of the master plan is the participative preparation of agreements and tangible measures for the municipal departments with the goal of a coordinated approach to climate change adaptation

The four main action areas of the project are:

  • Environment and nature protection
  • City planning
  • Health, social and emergency services
  • Economy

EPC oversees the extensive city-internal and external stakeholder participation and also public relations. Besides two larger public events, city-internal expert interviews and a series of issue-specific workshops will take place. The establishment of a network with external partners, for example with other municipalities, is supposed to create an active, topic-related exchange. As a part of public relations, EPC also develops the project’s PR-products.

Project duration

October 2019 – April 2020
